BIOGRAPHY Raden Ajeng Kartini was born on April 21, 1879, in Jepara, Central Java. She is known as a pioneering figure in Indonesian women's emancipation, the struggle for equal rights between women and men, especially in education. Kartini came from a Javanese aristocratic family. Her father was Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat, the regent of Jepara. Due to her noble status, Kartini was given the opportunity to attend ELS (Europese Lagere School) until the age of 12. After that, in accordance with Javanese custom at the time, she was required to undergo seclusion, a period during which women were not allowed to leave the house until marriage. During her seclusion, Kartini continued to study. She read numerous books, magazines, and newspapers from Europe.
