The Unexpected Visitor at Ranu Kumbolo

Last month, my friends and I decided to go on a weekend camping trip to Ranu Kumbolo, a beautiful lake located on the slopes of Mount Semeru in East Java. We planned this trip carefully, packing essentials like sturdy tents, warm sleeping bags, and enough food for three days.

We started our trek early on Friday morning. The trail was challenging but rewarding, with stunning views of the lush mountain forest. We finally reached the lake just before sunset. The sight of Ranu Kumbolo—a calm, clear blue lake surrounded by rolling hills—was absolutely breathtaking. We quickly set up our camp, cooked a simple dinner, and enjoyed the quiet, star-filled night.

On Saturday morning, we woke up to a crisp, cold morning. We were making pancakes for breakfast when we had an unexpected visitor: a small, friendly deer approached our campsite! It wasn't afraid of us and stayed near for a few minutes before quietly disappearing back into the trees. We managed to take a few photos of it.

Later that day, we hiked around the lake and spent the evening telling stories around a small campfire. The trip taught us the importance of teamwork and showed us the unspoiled beauty of nature. We left on Sunday, carrying nothing but memories and leaving nothing but footprints.

Long ago, in a peaceful village, lived an old widow named Mbok Rondo. She lived alone and deeply wished for a child. One night, a giant came to her house. The giant offered her a magical cucumber seed with one strict condition: if the seed grew and produced a baby girl, that girl must be returned to the giant on her seventeenth birthday to be eaten. Overwhelmed by her desire for a child, Mbok Rondo agreed to the terrifying bargain.

Mbok Rondo planted the seed. Soon, it yielded a magnificent golden cucumber. When she cut it open, a beautiful baby girl emerged, whom she named Timun Mas (Golden Cucumber). Mbok Rondo loved Timun Mas dearly.

Time flew by quickly. Timun Mas grew into a lovely young woman. The night before her seventeenth birthday, Mbok Rondo was visited by the giant in a dream, demanding his promise be fulfilled. Mbok Rondo was filled with sorrow and dread. She did not want to lose her daughter.

Mbok Rondo secretly sought help from a powerful hermit. The hermit gave her four small packets containing cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and terasi (fermented shrimp paste). These packets were weapons to fight the giant.

The next day, when the giant came, Mbok Rondo urged Timun Mas to run away, carrying the four packets. The furious giant immediately started chasing her. Timun Mas threw the first packet (cucumber seeds). Instantly, a dense cucumber forest grew, slowing the giant down. The giant managed to break free and continued the chase.

Timun Mas threw the second packet (needles). Sharp bamboo trees sprang up, piercing the giant's feet. The giant cried out in pain but kept pursuing her. When the giant was very close, Timun Mas threw the third packet (salt). A wide, boiling mud ocean appeared and enveloped the giant.

In desperation, Timun Mas threw the last packet (terasi). A vast and foul-smelling mud swamp formed. The giant plunged into it and, unable to escape, slowly drowned. Timun Mas was safe and returned home. They lived happily ever after, free from fear.
